About Why-Not-Chee:

🌿Community weekend fun

The Wynoochee Lake area is a remote hidden gem of the Olympic Peninsula. We feel it is so worth your time to make it to the area, that in addition to the gravel ride (which has a NEW FORMAT we are super excited about - see below for details!), we want it to be a community-driven weekend of connection, adventure, and fun on and off the bike.

Don't just ride and dash - we’re hosting a fun, community-focused race weekend experience at Why-Not-Chee, designed to make the event more than just race day. Come for the race, stay for the awesome company and take time to explore the beautiful area. Friends, family, and pets are welcome to camp for the weekend!

Feel free to join in the fun:

  • Camping, connection, and a supportive group atmosphere
  • A relaxed post-race dip in Whynoochee Lake led by Coach Sky (more about Coach Sky below)
  • A Sunday morning adventure ride from the campsite to local waterfalls
  • Don't forget to check out the interpretive area for the Wynoochee Dam that is near the swimming beach!

The Courses

💥New format and course for 2026!

🔄 The Loop: A stunning 23-mile course with just under 2,000’ of climbing per lap. Choose your own adventure:

1️⃣ One Lap: 23 Miles (The Sprint) 2️⃣ Two Laps: 46 Miles (The Mid) 3️⃣ Three Laps: 69 Miles (The Challenge)

The loops starts and ends at Satsop Center and heads west to do the "Big Creek Loop" around Mount Fitzgerald.

This area is peaceful, lush and green and perfect for a gravel adventure.

For 2026 we are introducing a Mass Start at 9:30 AM. Whether you are riding 1 lap or 3, everyone rolls out together.

Why we love this new format:

A loop course also means that friends and family can see you and cheer you on as you pass through Satsop Center between loops!!

Better on-course camaraderie - with multiple loops, riders will be together more and be able to cheer each other, or bond over your Type 2 Fun.

You will never be extremely remote, meaning lower stress and better support and safety.

Race Central / Parking / Camping

Race Central (Start, Finish, Awards, Post-race party) will be inside Satsop Center this year. Google Map Link. Parking will be along the roads to the north and northwest of Satsop (follow the instructions of the volunteers). You will get more info in your pre-race email about parking.

Satsop Center Camping - Satsop Center Camping (race hub) - During the race registration process, please indicate if you would like to camp at Satsop Center, and which type of site you would like (tent/car camp in "the field", RV site full hook ups, or individual car/tent campsite). They have told us they will officially enter your names to hold them, and trust you to pay when you arrive. BUT, they will get itchy to release them as we get closer to the race, so it is best to register early for Why-Not-Chee to be sure you get a spot.

Dispersed camping - Free dispersed camping is allowed on Olympic National Forest land according to these guidelines and regulations.  Just outside Satsop Center, along 2222 Road, or known as the "concrete pad" where we had the Start and Finish last year, you can dispersed camp along the tree line. We ask that you maximize the number of people who can camp there by parking near your fellow riders, and also please leave a strip along the road to use for race parking please! There are countless other spots all around the forest - go explore you may find a killer spot that is better!

Coho Campground - for those with medium or large RVs or trailers, or who like a more traditional campground experience, there is also Coho Campground on Wynoochee Lake. You can reserve a site 6 months in advance (so January 25 for you folks) by clicking  here. Reservation sites fill up fast, so mark your calendars for this one. That said, Loop A is First Come First Serve. There are 18 sites. If you get to the forest early in the day on Friday you may try for a spot. Coho Campground is 3.5 miles from Race Central and is right on the lake.
